South Brunswick Reads 2017:  The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind For the past 6 years, the SB school and public librarians have invited members of the community to engage in a common reading experience called South Brunswick Reads (SBReads).

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind Book Cover Our readings to-date have included the following:
  • 2011 - The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
  • 2012 - Alice and her Adventures in Wonderland
  • 2013 - Genre-based Literature: Fairy Tales
  • 2014 - Character Trait-based Literature: “GRIT” (Gumption, Resilience, Inner Strength and Tenacity)
  • 2015 - Theme-based Literature: Building Bridges
  • 2016 - Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead: Explorations in Science, Tech, Engineering, Art and Math
For our 7th year, we have selected a common title once again-- this time, a memoir. A story of hope and perseverance and the epitome of “Attitude Determines Altitude," The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is the story of William Kamkwamba from Malawi, Africa who, in response to crippling drought and famine, was forced to drop out of school. He self-studied in a village library, and at age 14 successfully designed and built a windmill (turbine) using blue gum trees, bicycle parts, and materials collected in a local scrapyard.

For more information about William and the South Brunswick Reads Program visit the SBSD Curriculum webpage.
